Helen's ring

18k White gold with orange, yellow & green sapphires.

Ben asked Helen to marry him at the Luminox festival in Oxford, England. The Luminox is a magical three days when Oxford's dreaming spires are transformed into a spectacular and beautiful environment with large-scale fire installations. So to remind her of that romantic night her firework ring incorporates flame colored sapphires together with her favourite colour green.

Emily's ring

John asked Emily to marry him whist at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert. Emily e-mailed me to tell me about the
wonderfully romantic moment John proposed:

"John had preceded me in his arrival to the desert and had worked with our camp of about 60 friends to stage the moment that he would ask me and they would all be in attendance. We gathered under the auspices of a group photo shoot at sunset. After the photos were taken everyone circled around and John started to give a speech (not uncommon for him) about friendship and how great it was for everyone to be there. And then he, along with 50 of our friends, dropped to their knees. He asked "Will you Marry Me?!" And the rest of the crowd parroted, "Will you Marry him?". My jaw hit the ground. Instead of a ring, took a zip tie with a bead tied to it and zipped it to my finger. Unbeknown to him, this was a dream ring come true. I'd always fantasized that the engagement ring I would wear would come from the heart, a gumball machine or an improvised form. I couldn't have been more thrilled".

A year after John proposed Emily still wore her bead ring (see photo above) and was rather reluctant to part with it. However she asked me to make a wedding ring for her using her zip tie bead ring as the basis for the design. The chosen design (shown above) incorporates a spinning yellow diamond studded gold bead to remind her of the wonderfully inventive original engagement ring that meant so much to her.

Rockpool ring

Christopher commissioned me to design a ring for his wife Carolynn.
We discussed a theme for Carolynn's ring...Christopher wrote:

'Carolynn loves geology and science, especially picking through rocks and tidal pools. She likes finding all the little stuff that you don't see at first glance. I think the happiest thing in her whole life will be doing this with our children Walter and little Jack in tow.'

Together we designed Carolynn's rockpool ring to remind her of those happy afternoons spent at the ocean.

Wave ring

18k White gold. 1ct Vs oval diamond.

Alan commissioned me to make an engagement ring for Tina. He asked me to design a simple, elegant ring with a wave theme -
a reminder of their fondest first date spent at the beach.
Two 18k white gold waves hold in place an oval one carat diamond, with an inscription inside in Alan's own handwriting.

Thank you to you both. It was a pleasure to work with Alan on the design of this ring, I'm so pleased it was such a hit.

Pod pendant

Jacob commissioned me to design a pendant for his wife Yunna. He wanted it to complement the engagement ring and earrings I had made for her, but take a different direction in design.

Here is Yunna’s pod pendant. The inside of the 18k white gold pod is lined with bezel set sapphires and diamonds.

Felicity's Ring

18k White gold, Sapphires, Rubies and Diamonds

Bradley asked Felicity to marry him on a Costa Rican beach under a perfect night sky. She remembers the bubbling surf lapping at their feet, the sea urchins on the white sand and the stars. I designed her ring to remind her of that special night.

She sent me a beautiful color change sapphire she and Bradley had bought together. It sits in a diamond and ruby studded cup setting. The ring shank is the shape of a sea urchin section, set with rubies and sapphires in the formation of sea urchin bumps, diamonds to remind her of that starry night and bubbles for the surf.
Inside there is an inscription in Bradley's handwriting.

"Marry me" ring

18K yellow gold, 0.71ct VVS1 Princess Diamond; yellow, cognac & chocolate diamonds.

Walker commissioned me to make this engagement ring for Nina. He had been considering a traditional diamond solitaire when he came to me, but he thought Nina would want something a little different from the rings he had seen so far.
The princess cut diamond is suspended between the two outside walls. There are yellow, chocolate and cognac colored diamonds around the ring which say "Marry me" in Morse code.
Nina accepted Walker's proposal on Christmas Day. Congratulations to you both, I know you'll have a wonderful life together.

Emma's Ring

18K yellow gold, Aquamarine, White & Yellow diamonds

Emma e-mailed me from New Zealand. David had bought her a beautiful cushion cut aquamarine - his birthstone - which she commissioned me to set. She wanted an elegant uncluttered ring, but something a little bit quirky. The design Emma settled on was my favourite too. From the top the ring looks so simple, but each side of the ring shank is set with white and yellow diamonds - her birthstone. The diamonds spell a secret message in Morse Code.

Millie's Ladybug ring

18K Palladium white gold, 18k Yellow gold, Spessartine Garnets from Africa and the Morefield Mine, Åmelia County, Virginia, USA.

Brent came to me with a wonderful story that he wanted represented in a ring for his wife Eldyne, to celebrate the birth of their daughter Amelia or "Millie"...

"5 months before Amelia, aka 'Millie' was born, we were getting her room situated when we started to notice ladybugs flying into the through the doors that go out to a second story balcony. There would be 10-30 in the room (and often throughout the house) at any given time. This went on throughout the pregnancy."

Brent wanted an elegant piece that spoke of this, but he didn't want the ladybug to be too obvious. He also wanted to incorporate Millie's birthstone - Garnet.
Together we designed this piece. The wings open and close over Spessartine Garnets around the ring. I chose Spessartine garnets since they were the color of his two favourite ladies' hair - both Eldyne and little Millie have the most wonderful flame colored locks.
Brent had read that Spessartine garnets were once mined in Amelia County in Virginia. Commercial mining at the Amelia mine has long since ceased, but the old mine was open to fossickers who scour the dumps in the hope of finding a facetable stone. It was a tall order, but we simply had to find a Spessartine garnet from Amelia County for Millie's ring...
After weeks of searching, e-mailing and posting on forums, a very kind man contacted me. Dick had a small amount of Spessartine rough he had found at the Amelia mine and was willing to facet a stone from his cleanest piece. The Amelia stone is set in yellow gold in the most open winged ladybug.
Thank you Dick Davies, you made the Millie ring very special; and also to Brent - it was a wonderful project to work on.

I designed and made this sugar spoon for the 2006 Memento Awards. It won best Memento of Queensland, sponsored by Tourism Queensland.
It is made from solid Australian tarnish resistant sterling silver and the sugar cane leaf design is inlaid with dark brown Queensland sugar and resin.
Sugar is one of Australia's most important export crops and a vital industry for Queensland which produces about 95% of Australia's raw sugar. Queensland's warm sunny weather provides ideal growing conditions for sugar cane and the industry is at the heart of many Queensland communities. The tropical grass grows on family-owned farms which stretch along Queensland's beautiful coastline, providing a livelihood for many Queenslanders.

Yunna's ring and earrings

18K Palladium white gold, Diamonds, Ceylon Sapphires

Yunna was fairly clear about what she wanted for her engagement/wedding ring and gave me a great brief. She was keen to have a cluster of different shaped diamonds and sapphires and wanted the ring to be larger than is usual for an engagement ring since she was going to wear only one.
Yunna's fiance Jacob contacted me in secret whilst I was designing Yunna's ring for her. He wanted to commission some matching earrings for Yunna as a surprise for her birthday. The earrings dangle freely on a hinge just below the top diamond and are shaped to echo the profile of her engagement ring.

Saul Bell Award Presentation

On June 6th I attended the Saul Bell Awards in Las Vegas to pick up the 2006 Grand Prize for my carousel cufflinks. I had a great time at the awards, the people at Rio Grande were wonderful and it was a real honour to be there. Here is a picture of me accepting the award from Alan Bell, heavily pregnant with our first baby.
