North Bennet Street School
25 January, 2012
I'm back at the jewelry bench after over a years break which I spent with our two young boys. It was lovely to spend so much time with them before they started kindergarten, and though I do love lego, it's great to be building things in gold again. My 4 year old said that we should make Lego jewelry and sell it so that he could buy sweets. I see he's been beaten to it: www.rewarestyle.com
I've also accepted a part-time teaching post in the jewelry department of North Bennet Street School in Boston's North end. I started there in September and am thoroughly enjoying teaching. If you ever get the chance to visit, it's the most wonderful place, filled with students involved in the creative work of making beautiful objects - jewelry, furniture, violins...

For Shelley - an Daisy engagement ring inspired by the song Daisy Bell, composed in 1892 by Harry Dacre.
'Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do,
I'm half crazy all for the love of you.
It won't be a stylish marriage -
I can't afford a carriage,
But you'd look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.'

Ribbon ring

18k white gold, diamonds, dusty pink sapphires.

Nathan wrote to me about his romantic proposal under the stars on an island off the coast of Australia....
'For quite some time now I have loved your work and always planned to get you to make the engagement ring in the unlikely, but hopeful event of me finding a lady I wish to marry.
Well I have found her and I proposed two weeks ago under the stars on the beach of North Stradbroke island with a ribbon for a ring and a poem.
Rachelle really loves her ribbon ring and would be happy to have that forever, but would love to have a ring that symbolizes the ribbon and the events connected to it.'
After much discussion about her style and personality....Rachelle's favourite colour is pink, she loves butterflies, Elie Saab, Alex Perry, she's whimsical, dreams of a Parisian Carousal at her wedding.... the design for her ribbon ring was born.
"I love it and Rachelle LOVES it too, she is so excited. It fit perfectly and she loves the feel. She is always looking at her hand, just checking it is real.
Thank you very much, Nathan"

Feather rings
|
Sara's pair-bond ring: 18k rose gold, Red/orange, pink sapphires.
Andrew's pair-bond ring: 18k yellow gold.
|
Andrew wrote to me about his love for Sara. He talked of her child-like passion and enthusiam for life, her love of animals and especially birds. A common date involved going to the pet store just to visit the birds, which she loved. As they grew closer, they began to refer to their love as a pair bond, and in letters to one another they would sign off with a drawing of two birds and a heart.
So in keeping with their style and taste, I designed their pair-bond rings.
Sara's engagement ring and matching wedding ring are made from golden feathers - and when the two rings sit side by side, the feathers match up in the shape of a heart. She loves warm colours, so her rose gold rings are set with red/orange and pink sapphires.
Continuing the theme, but in keeping with his more minimalist taste, Andrews ring is a simple band embossed with a pair of feathers.

Tango rings
|
18k white gold, emeralds and rubies.
|
Andra and Andrei's love affair with dance was one of the things that brought them together.
In his first e-mail to me Andrei wrote....
"Be it the first date in a steamy, brightly colored red, green and noisy Fiesta Latina (over green Caipirinhas and equally green Mojitos) with lots of Salsa - or the systematic love affair with Tango (first enthusiastically but difficult and now comfortably ours), dance is our thread."
So, in keeping with their style and taste, I designed these wedding bands for them. Their rings are embossed with the lines of two bodies dancing the tango and Andra's ring is set with rubies and emeralds to remind her of their first fiery encounter at the red and green Fiesta Latina.

Sweetpea ring

18k rose gold, 14k green gold. Yellow, pink and beryllium orange Sapphires.

Brooke calls her fiancée Matto her 'sweetpea'. So when Matto asked me to design a wedding/engagement ring for Brooke, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to design a viney sweetpea ring for her. Brooke loves color, so we used as much as possible in her ring - rose gold, green gold vines and orange, yellow and pink sapphire sweetpeas.
Thanks so much for your commission Brooke and Matto, and for waiting so patiently for your ring.

Quentin's ring
|
18k white gold. Purple, yellow and orange sapphires
|
Wes asked me to design a ring for his wife Laura to commemorate the birth of their son Quentin Pascal Cherry.
Wes was keen that the ring should reflect his baby son's name. Quentin is Latin for 5th and Pascal is after the French mathematician Blaise Pascal known for his triangle. So every fifth sapphire is a cherry colored triangle, with Wes and Laura represented by their favorite colors - yellow and purple gems.
'It’s beautiful! What an awesome and wonderful surprise and a beautiful way to remember the birth of our amazing little one -Laura'
